Еще в детстве, прочитав рассказ Пантелеева "Новенькая", я была удивлена и ошарашена некой несправедливостью одновременно (а в те времена я была знатным борцом за справедливость:)
По сюжету в школе появляется новенькая девочка, и один из ее одноклассников, узнав, что та из Украины тут же поставил вопрос ребром:
- Как по-украински будет "собака"?
- Ну почему сразу именно собака, а не кошка, например?! Ну чем кошки хуже?! - Тут же возмутился мой внутренний бобер.
С тех пор много воды утекло... Мы переехали из Риги в Израиль, потом я прожила три года в Белмонта, и вот уже прошло два с половиной женевских года. Латышский напрочь выветрился из моей памяти, но вот как будет по-латышски собака я, как ни странно, еще помню. И вообще, именно это слово я знаю на максимальном количестве языков - семи. Мой "персонал бест" так сказать :)
Дальше идут котики - 6 языков (минус латышский с украинским, но зато +итальянский), а после - уже не столь интересно. Конечно, можно нагуглить всё, что угодно, по крайней мере найти во всемирной паутине перевод слова "кошка" явно не проблема, но зачем портить статистику? :)

Dog's life
Well, why am I talking all about sad things? I'll better write a little bit for the popularity of dogs in languages.
Once in my childhood, reading the story "A New Student", I was surprised and disapointed at the same time by some injustice (and in those days I was a great fighter for justice :)
According to the plot, a new girl appears in the school. Imidiately after one of her classmates learned that she had moved from the Ukraine, he asked the girl a very important question: "What is the word for "dog" be in Ukrainian language?"
"Why is it just a dog, and not a cat, for example ?! What makes cats to be worse?", my inner voice muttered.
Since then, a lot of water has flowed under the bridge ... We moved from Riga to Israel, then I lived in Belmont for three years, and now it's been two and a half years in Geneva. The Latvian has completely vanished from my memory, but I still remember how to say "dog" in this language. And in general, I know this word in the maximum number of languages - seven. My "Personal Best" as it is told in figure skating :)
The second place - it's not hard to guess - was won by cats: 6 languages (minus Latvian with Ukrainian, but + Italian), and other words are not so successful. Of course, you can google anything you like, at least it's not a problem to translate "cat" into many languages using the World Wide Web, but why I should spoil the statistics? :)
